Abba released “Fernando” in the UK on the 3rd March 1976 - the single entered the charts at number 44 before moving up to number 14 then entering the top 10 where it spent four weeks before reaching the number 1 spot on the 2nd May.
In a strange twist of fate the single “Fernando” replaced at the top of the charts was the UK’s Eurovision Song Content winner “Save All Your Kisses For Me” by the Brotherhood Of Man - a group its safe to say was modelled on Abba.
The top 5 selling singles in the UK that week was as follows -
- Abba “Fernando”
- Brotherhood Of Man “Save All Your Kisses For Me”
- Hank Mizell “Jungle Rock”
- Laurie Lingo And The Dipsticks “Convoy G.B.”
- Fox “S-S-S-Single Bed”
“Fernando” spent 4 weeks at the top of the UK chart and in total enjoyed a 15 week stay in the charts ; it was also the 7th biggest selling single in the UK of 1976 - Abba’s “Dancing Queen” was the 4th and “Mamma Mia” was the 21st.
My all time favorite song!
